Rights and quotation policy

We use short excerpts to compare specific choices in voice, form, wordplay, and interpretation. We place each quotation beside our own criticism, limit it to what the comparison needs, and credit the translation and source edition. Our source record also keeps the passage location and check date.

We label public-domain translations separately from protected modern translations. A public-domain text can still appear in a modern edition whose introduction, notes, or presentation remain protected. When a named translator did not write every book in a collaborative work, we give credit at the passage level.

We review the amount quoted, the purpose of each excerpt, its attribution, and the context in which it appears. If a comparison needs less text to make its point, we shorten it.

Corrections and requests

If we misattribute a quotation, use a different revision from the one we cite, or quote more than the analysis needs, we will correct or shorten it. Rights holders may also ask us to review a source. Send corrections and rights requests to [email protected].
